With the announcement of the death of UK TiVo Series one boxes, I decided to search for a TiVo replacement. Although I welcome the new TiVo box for the UK, I’m very disappointed that TiVo didn’t choose to release a TiVo powered FreeView box for those of us that do not want to pay out for cable TV. So what options are there for us avid TiVo fans?
For those of you who wish to keep your UK Series One TiVo running, you could sign the petition and cross your fingers. Browsing the web a few months back, I came across talk of an open source EPG server in the works. Unfortunately, I can’t find the link.
I’ve opted to replace the TiVo box completely. My current TiVo setup uses a standard FreeView box which receives the crisp digital video, converts it to analogue and pipes it into my TiVo which then goes and encodes it digital video resulting in a rather than perfect image. I want to avoid all this conversion so I’ve been on the hunt for a decent FreeView DVR/PVR. Another reason for ditching my TiVo is that I want to be able to record more than one channel at a time. There is very little on TV nowadays and the decent programmes always seem to be on at the same time.
After hunting around for the perfect device, I finally pulled out my wallet and bought a Humax HDR-FOX T2. Costing the same price as my TiVo Series 1 (£300), the HDR-FOX T2 boasts some nice features but is it the TiVo replacement I’ve been looking for?
Stay tuned and I’ll post some mini-reviews…
TiVo fans of the UK… what will you be using in June 2011?
